Help with the Optimal Case apps for iPhone, iPad and Android, and with this website.
Contact us
Email hello@optimalcase.com. Tell us which app or page you were using, your device and its system version, and what happened. A person reads every message and replies by email.
Please don't send passwords. Your app data stays on your device, so we can't look it up or recover it; a screenshot helps if something looks wrong.
The apps
Where can I get the apps?
The Optimal Case apps for iPhone and iPad (iOS and iPadOS 17 or later) and for Android (Android 9 or later) are built, and they're coming soon to the App Store and Google Play, worldwide and free. The figures and rules in them are New York's, for renting and buying in Manhattan and the Hamptons. They aren't in either store yet, so there's nothing to download today. This page and the app page will link to the stores once they're there.
Do I need an account?
No. The apps have no account and no sign-in: open one and start. They don't sign in to your optimalcase.com account, and the rentals you log on the website don't appear in the apps (syncing the two is planned for a later version).
Where is my data kept?
Only on your device, in the app's own storage. Rentals, viewings, checklists, notes, photos, voice notes, readings and reports never reach us, so we can't see them and can't recover them if they're lost. Something leaves your device only when you tap Share or Print and choose where it goes.
Are my app data backed up?
On Android, no: the app's data is deliberately left out of Google backups and device-to-device transfer, so it doesn't move to a new phone. To keep a viewing, share its PDF report somewhere you keep files. On iPhone and iPad, your iCloud or computer backup, if you use one, includes the app's data like any other app's, so restoring that backup to a new device brings it back.
How do I delete my data in the app?
Delete a rental, viewing, photo or voice note in the app to remove it from the device. To remove everything, open Settings in the app and choose Erase everything (on Android, "Erase everything on this device"); it happens straight away and can't be undone. Deleting the app deletes its data too. There's nothing to delete on our side, because we never receive it.
Why does the app ask for the camera, microphone or location?
Only for the feature you're using, and only when you first use it. The camera takes room photos during a viewing (and on iPhone and iPad estimates how bright a room is). The microphone records voice notes and measures noise; the noise reading records nothing. Speech recognition turns voice notes into text, on the device. Location stamps a viewing and its photos with where they were taken, only while you use the app. Notifications are the reminders you set. Face ID, fingerprint or screen lock is used only if you turn on the app lock. Every permission is optional: refuse it or change it in your device's settings, and the rest of the app keeps working.
Are voice notes sent anywhere?
On iPhone and iPad, no: transcripts are made on the device only, and if your device can't do that the note is kept as audio without a transcript. On Android, recognition happens on your phone where it has an on-device speech model (Android 12 and later). On Android phones without one, the phone's system speech service (usually Google's) may process the audio under Google's terms; the app itself has no internet access.
What are the sample rentals?
To show how things work, the apps can add a few sample rentals, labelled as samples or examples. They're illustrations, not real listings. Delete them like any other rental, or clear everything with Erase everything.
Figures and advice
Do the apps give the same numbers as the website?
Yes. The apps' calculators are ports of the website's own code, and they're tested against the same worked examples, to the cent. Each result shows how it's calculated and links to the website's method page. When a rate or rule changes, the website changes first and the apps follow in their next update, so if they ever differ, the website's figure and its checked date are the current ones.
Is this financial, legal or tax advice?
No. The apps and the website give estimates to help you understand the numbers and ask better questions. A viewing report is your own record, not a professional inspection. Your attorney, lender, tax adviser or inspector confirms the figures and the condition for your own lease or purchase.
Your website account
I need help with my optimalcase.com account.
Accounts are only on the website, and they're free. The help page covers what an account stores, how to download your data and how to delete your account. There's no self-service password reset yet: email hello@optimalcase.com from the address you signed up with and we'll reset it by hand.
